Branding Yourself? How This Man Successfully built his Brand through Twitter

Hello again fellow bloggers and readers! For the last month I have been following the news on a person named Carter Wilkinson. He was just an ordinary guy, living in the U.S.A, until the 5th of April, when he used his Twitter profile to tweet Wendy’s (a big fast-food chain in America), ‘how many retweets for a year of free chicken nuggets?’ Wendy’s replied back with ’18 million,’ and this is when Carter’s campaign for free chicken nuggets began and his brand trended online.

As you can see from the image above, users on Twitter reacted positively to this tweet and now he has just over 3.5 million retweets. His brand-name spread online through the (hashtag) #nuggsforcarter, and even got the attention of Ellen Degeneres as she was the current holder of ‘the most retweets on Twitter (not anymore).’ This just demonstrates the power of Twitter and how quickly Carter’s brand image spread across the internet.

Now I know what you’re all thinking.. was it luck that he gained so much attention? I would say the answer is Yes and No. Yes because at first, it would have been just his friends and family retweeting his post, but ‘No,’ because the public on Twitter liked his brand and his personality.

From doing an assignment on ‘Branding Myself,’ I have learnt there are many factors and tools that make up your brand online. Carter’s brand image, was consistent and authentic online and this is why his campaign has been successful.

Through his new-found fame he began raising awareness and money for various charities (Dave Thomas Foundation and Moms on the Run). Users on Twitter noticed this, and their perception of him was being a kind and thoughtful person. Through all of this, even more retweets of his #nuggsforcarter post, as users supported his brand and personality.

By having a likeable brand online, this had opened up opportunities for him such as ‘Go Daddy,’ a web-hosting company, helping him set up a website, where Carter sells T-shirts online for charity.

Carter is an example of how important branding yourself correctly online is. If users like your content and support your actions, it can lead to great things. In Carter’s case, he has become a ‘well-known brand-name online.’ With his strong brand that reflects ‘his love for nuggets’ and his good-natured personality for wanting to raise money for charities, it has led to great opportunities for him.
